Throughout the 43 square miles, it was one of the earlier master planned communities divided into "villages", each with its own architecture, and included many parks and open areas. It also includes the University of California, Irvine, as well as satellite campuses from other universities. Former military bases MCAS El Toro and MCAS Tustin, are being developed into residential and cultural areas, called the Great Park and Tustin Legacy, respectively.
